Project Overview
Charter completed remediation within the former Medfield State Hospital campus in Medfield, Massachusetts. The work addressed tetrachloroethylene released from the hospital’s former laundry facility, which had impacted both soil and groundwater.
The site sits next to an active public park and homes, so the project required continuous pedestrian management, fencing, dust control and careful coordination of construction access.
Charter’s Role
- Excavation and on-site reuse of clean overburden, and off-site disposal of impacted saturated-zone soils
- Dewatering with on-site water treatment and recharge of treated water
- A compacted zero-valent iron layer at the base of the excavation, with reuse soils blended with ZVI
- A permeable reactive barrier along the downgradient edge of the treatment area
- Asbestos abatement, utility cutting and capping, shoring, monitoring-well work and full site restoration
- Tier IV generators to reduce emissions near the park
Outcomes & Benefits
The project treated the source of contamination and put long-term groundwater protection in place, while working safely alongside an active public park and residential neighborhood.
