Project

Greenwich High School PCB Soil Remediation

PCB Soil Remediation

  • Town of Greenwich
  • State & Local
  • Greenwich, Connecticut

Project Overview

Charter completed a three-phase PCB soil remediation program across the athletic fields at Greenwich High School, which had originally been built using PCB-containing fill.

The work was split into annual summer phases so that only one field was unavailable at a time, limiting the impact on the school’s athletic programs and the surrounding neighborhood.

Charter’s Role

  • Excavation and off-site disposal of PCB-impacted soil, moved by truck to a rail transload facility and then by rail to approved disposal sites
  • Clean backfill and new subsurface stormwater collection
  • Gas-management geocomposite and an LLDPE engineered cap with drainage geocomposite
  • New synthetic turf fields, fencing and site restoration
  • A 25,000-gallon irrigation cistern, retaining wall, accessible ramp, stairs and bleachers in Phase 2
  • Targeted hotspot excavation near the school building in Phase 3

Outcomes & Benefits

Close coordination with school administrators, the Town, the Board of Health, police, students and athletic programs kept the campus running throughout. Export trucks were loaded before the morning rush and deliveries scheduled after school hours, and the school gained safe, modern fields for years to come.
