Project Overview
Charter built new flood protection along the Annisquam River to protect Gloucester High School, its athletic fields and adjacent parking from tidal flooding, storm surge and moon tides.
The centerpiece is a 1,441-linear-foot sheet pile floodwall along the riverbank, tied into earthen levees at each end and protected by scour protection on its landward side.
Charter’s Role
- Installation of the sheet pile floodwall and riverbank scour protection
- Construction of northwest and southeast earthen levees
- Design adaptations, including shorter sheets and modified king piles, where existing utilities crossed the wall alignment
- A crane-mat work platform to support installation equipment on soft soils
- Pavement replacement, tree removal and replanting, erosion repairs and relocation of fences, benches and other site features
Outcomes & Benefits
The completed floodwall and levees give a busy school campus lasting protection against rising tides and coastal storms, delivered while working around existing utilities and challenging soil conditions.
