Project Overview
Charter completed the remediation of a 5.2-acre former manufactured gas plant site near Mount Hope Street in North Attleboro, Massachusetts. The site spanned 14 parcels owned by Liberty Utilities, the Town of North Attleboro and private abutters, including commercial, residential, riverbank, riverbed and wetland areas along the Ten Mile River and Mire Brook.
Because work took place alongside homes and active businesses, the project relied on careful sequencing and strong controls to protect neighbors throughout construction.
Charter’s Role
- Excavation and off-site disposal of MGP-impacted soil and sediment, with moisture conditioning as needed
- Water control using Supersack cofferdams and temporary sheet piling
- Multi-stage water treatment systems discharging to the Ten Mile River and Mire Brook
- Import and placement of clean backfill, topsoil and habitat soil
- Self-performed construction of a precast retaining wall along the river
- Foam and misting systems, acoustic blankets, vibration monitoring and container sound barriers
Outcomes & Benefits
The remediation removed a long-standing MGP legacy from a neighborhood riverfront, restoring the river corridor, wetlands and properties while keeping impacts on nearby residents and businesses to a minimum.
