Charter Finishes Phase 1 of Longest Living Shoreline Project in NJ

In November, Charter began a $2.3 million contract to bring restoration to Shooting Island after decades of erosion and transform it into a “living shoreline,” which will provide an environment for wildlife refuge and reduce storm impact. We installed 2,700 linear feet of rock sill and 1,400 linear feet of oyster habitat on the northern and western edges of the 150-acre swath of mud and marsh grass near Ocean City, making it the longest living shoreline project in New Jersey history. The “oyster castles” will provide a hard surface for oysters to cling to and hopefully encourage them to settle along Shooting Island, while the sill should provide protection for the wetlands and absorb energy from the waves and currents.
