Muddy River Honored with EBC’s Collaboration Award

Every year the Environmental Business Council of New England honors companies, organizations and individuals for outstanding environmental/energy accomplishments in the promotion of a sustainable, clean environment through their EBEE awards. This year the Muddy River Flood Risk and Restoration (Muddy River) project and project stakeholders received the Nicholas Humber Environmental-Energy Award for Outstanding Collaboration. We are proud to have been a part of this historic project and the incredible team that successfully completed it which includes the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, New England District (CENAE), Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Conservation and Recreation, City of Boston, Town of Brookline, GZA GeoEnvironmental and Fort Hill Companies, LLC.

The Nicholas Humber Environmental-Energy Award for Outstanding Collaboration recognizes a joint, environmentally related effort that embodies the global environmental values and human spirit exemplified by Nicholas Humber. The Muddy River project, which was a collaborative effort from both the private and public sector, brought Frederick Law Olmsted’s original design for the Muddy River back to life, reduced the flood risk to the area, enhanced the environment and gave a vital green space to the heart of Boston.

The project had a unique set of logistical challenges that required effective communication across all stakeholders and innovative thinking. High vehicle and pedestrian traffic volumes in densely populated, congested urban area required that all facets of the project be precisely sequenced. Due to the significance and importance of the project to the community, this project had numerous stakeholders / sponsors and special interest groups following it closely. The stakeholders / sponsors included CENAE, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation, City of Boston, and Town of Brookline.  Charter performed the construction on the project, along with major team subcontractors, Fort Hill Infrastructure Services. The construction team received engineering support from GZA GeoEnvironmental, Inc. who provided geotechnical engineering, earth support, and water control.

This was a milestone project not only for Charter, but for the entire Boston community. Congratulations to everyone involved in completing this project which has helped to restore the Emerald Necklace.
